In a significant crackdown on spam calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has blacklisted 50 companies and disconnected 2.75 lakh telecom resources, including SIP DID and mobile numbers. This move is part of TRAI’s aggressive strategy to combat the misuse of telecom resources by unregistered telemarketers.
In a release dated Tuesday, September 3, TRAI announced that access providers have taken stringent measures to address spam call issues. “Access Providers have acted decisively against the misuse of telecom resources, blacklisting over 50 entities and disconnecting more than 2.75 lakh SIP, DID, mobile numbers, and other telecom resources,” the regulator stated.
This action follows a troubling surge in spam call complaints. Over the first half of 2024, TRAI received more than 7.9 lakh complaints about spam calls from unregistered telemarketers.
On August 13, TRAI issued strict directives to access providers, mandating the immediate cessation of promotional calls from unregistered marketers using SIP, PRI, or other telecom resources. “TRAI has taken these matters very seriously and directed all Access Providers to stop promotional voice calls from unregistered senders or telemarketers immediately,” the release noted.
Further penalties are on the horizon for non-compliance. TRAI has warned that unregistered telemarketers caught misusing telecom resources could face severe consequences, including the disconnection of all their telecom resources for up to two years and blacklisting.
To further curb spam calls and enhance user experience, TRAI has also proposed amendments to anti-spam regulations. A consultation paper released on August 28 outlines potential changes, including a tariff for phone calls and text messages sent from ten-digit mobile numbers exceeding a specific daily limit.
TRAI’s rigorous measures are expected to reduce the frequency of spam calls and improve the overall efficiency of the telecom system. The regulator urges all stakeholders to adhere to these new directives to ensure a smoother and more reliable telecom experience for users.
