Former Wrestling Star Black Bart Passes Away at 76

The wrestling world is mourning the loss of Richard Harris, better known to fans as Black Bart, who passed away at the age of 76 after battling stage 4 liver cancer.

Harris’ wife shared the heartbreaking news on his Facebook page, announcing his passing and reflecting on his life and legacy.

Black Bart began his wrestling career in 1975, taking on several in-ring personas throughout his journey, including Man Mountain Harris, Hangman Harris, and Hangman Ricky Harris. Over the years, he competed in numerous wrestling promotions, including Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, Georgia Championship Wrestling, Mid-South Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling, Universal Wrestling Federation, World Wrestling Federation (now WWE), and World Championship Wrestling.

After leaving WCW in 1992, Bart joined the Global Wrestling Federation, where he won the Brass Knuckles Championship and held the GWF World Tag Team Championships three times, including one reign with John Hawk (later known as John Bradshaw Layfield). He also formed tag teams such as The Wild Bunch with Bill Irwin and The Rough Riders with Johnny Mantell.

Bart’s accolades included the NWA National Heavyweight Championship and other regional titles, showcasing his versatility and skill in the ring. He continued to wrestle on the independent scene until his retirement in 2002, though he made appearances in 2006 for Texas-based promotions and NWA reunion events.

Beyond his in-ring accomplishments, Black Bart contributed to the wrestling industry by training future stars. WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield was among his trainees, and he operated a wrestling school at the Dallas Sportatorium, where Necro Butcher was a graduate.

In his final months, Harris faced financial struggles that limited his access to medical treatment. He returned home from the hospital after his insurance expired, discontinuing chemotherapy.

The wrestling community, including Wrestleview, extends heartfelt condolences to Harris’ family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. Black Bart’s contributions to professional wrestling will be remembered and cherished by those who knew him and followed his storied career.
