Seth Rollins Reflects on What WWE Needs Most Heading into 2025

As 2024 winds down, Seth Rollins shared some candid insights on The Pivot podcast about what he believes is missing in WWE today. According to Rollins, the wrestling world thrives on dynamic storytelling, which often includes a balance between beloved heroes and captivating villains. But in the current landscape, the balance may be a bit off.

Reflecting on the past few years, Rollins pointed to WWE’s most recent era, where fan-favorite stars dominate the spotlight. “Some of our bigger booms have been with face champions,” Rollins noted, referencing past champions who played the hero role. He highlighted Roman Reigns as a prime example; for the past four years, Reigns has reigned as “The Tribal Chief” — arguably the company’s biggest villain. But now, WWE is seeing a shift as more stars, including Reigns himself, embrace the hero’s role.

Rollins noted that right now, top names like Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, and Sami Zayn are “faces,” meaning they’re playing characters that fans rally behind. Even Reigns has taken on a babyface (good guy) role, showing just how dramatically the roster has evolved. “You have this era where everything is clicking and people are loving so much of what is going on,” he said, but quickly added, “I’m looking around and thinking, ‘We’re missing some good heels around here.’”

This shift, Rollins explained, is part of wrestling’s cyclical nature. For WWE to continue thriving, it needs a mix of faces and heels — beloved heroes and loathed villains. Rollins referenced legends like Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Bruno Sammartino, who drew crowds and sold tickets as fan-favorite champions. The key, he suggested, is striking that balance in a way that keeps fans invested.

Rollins’ comments serve as a reminder that WWE’s success has always relied on captivating characters and compelling rivalries. As we move into 2025, fans might start seeing the rise of a new generation of villains, ready to take on WWE’s powerhouse heroes and keep the action fresh.
