Wrestling veteran Stevie Richards recently shared his thoughts on Chelsea Green’s current position in WWE, suggesting that her real-life relationship with former WWE star Matt Cardona (previously known as Zack Ryder) might be impacting her career.
During a discussion on Vince Russo’s podcast, The Brand, Richards praised Green’s performance, particularly highlighting her impressive showing in the Dumpster Match against Michin on a recent episode of SmackDown. He expressed confusion over why Green hasn’t received a bigger push in WWE, despite her talent and hard work.
Richards speculated that Green’s lack of momentum in WWE might be linked to her husband, Matt Cardona, who hasn’t returned to the company despite many fans hoping for it. Richards pointed out that although WWE, under Chief Content Officer Triple H, might not be deliberately trying to hold Green back, her marriage to Cardona could be a reason she’s not more prominently featured.
Richards explained that WWE’s backstage politics can sometimes affect a superstar’s career based on their personal relationships: “I’m not saying they’re trying to bury her, but she might just not be figured in because of her association with him,” Richards said. “It’s very political, and sometimes you pay for the decisions or relationships you have outside of the ring.”
Despite the speculation, Richards was full of praise for Green, calling her an entertaining and durable performer who has proven she’s more than capable in the ring. He mentioned that she’s overcome injury setbacks and continues to excel, adding that he couldn’t find any other reason why she hasn’t been given a more prominent role except for the potential political aspect.
Former WWE writer Vince Russo also chimed in on the podcast, voicing his admiration for Green. Russo stated that Green is one of the few things in WWE he genuinely enjoys watching, calling her the most entertaining part of the company.
Though Green enjoyed a win against Michin on the September 6 episode of SmackDown, she has faced several losses between June and September. Fans are now left wondering if she’ll soon receive the push Richards and Russo believe she deserves.
