Why Seth Rollins Embraced the “Freakin” in His WWE Name

For over a decade, Seth Rollins has cemented his legacy as one of WWE’s greatest superstars. A multiple-time champion and future Hall of Famer, Rollins has achieved nearly everything possible in WWE. However, one question fans often ask is why “Freakin” became a permanent part of his official WWE name.

In late 2021, WWE officially began introducing him as “Seth Freakin Rollins,” and the name stuck. It accompanied a flashy new theme song that instantly became a fan favorite, with WWE audiences singing along to it during his entrances—and sometimes even when the music wasn’t playing.

During an October 2022 interview, Rollins revealed he wasn’t sure how long “Freakin” would last as part of his name. Yet, two years later, the moniker remains firmly attached.

Vince McMahon’s Role in Adding “Freakin”
When asked about the origin of the nickname, Rollins credited former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon for coming up with the idea. In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Rollins explained:

“I give that credit to the old man. The middle name was his idea back in the day. I don’t remember why. I don’t remember how it came about. I think he was just bored with Seth Rollins and he was like, ‘Ah, you’ll be Seth Freakin Rollins again.’ Okay, cool. Sold a lot of T-shirts when we did it, so whatever.”

Rollins’ Suggestion for Using “Freakin”

Rollins also shared his thoughts on how WWE should use the nickname. While he appreciates the name’s impact, he wasn’t thrilled with how it was initially overused in every mention of him.

“The thing that killed me was when we first did it, everybody had to say ‘Freakin’ every single time they mentioned my name—on commentary, anywhere,” Rollins said. “The first thing I did when I had the opportunity was let’s just pull back on that. How about I just say it? If someone’s introducing me in a grandiose manner, they can say it. But if they’re just talking about me, they could just say Seth Rollins, it’s okay.”

Rollins compared this to other iconic WWE names, noting that stars like Roman Reigns and Bret Hart weren’t always referred to by their full nicknames in casual mentions.

Rollins Headlines Raw Netflix Premiere

Most recently, Seth “Freakin” Rollins headlined WWE Monday Night Raw’s Netflix premiere in a highly anticipated main event against CM Punk. Although Rollins came up short, the match capped off what WWE billed as the biggest episode of Raw in its history.

With or without “Freakin,” Seth Rollins continues to prove why he’s one of WWE’s top stars and a true visionary in the ring.
