James Gunn Updates Fans on Brightburn 2 Potential
In response to a fan inquiry on Threads, James Gunn recently addressed the status of a potential Brightburn sequel. Initially, talks for a sequel occurred shortly after the original film’s theatrical release, but Gunn explained that complicated rights issues, with him owning only half, make the sequel’s realization unlikely.
This clarification follows Gunn’s earlier statement on Threads a month ago, where he indicated that there are currently no active plans for Brightburn 2, despite an announcement from production company The H Collective in September 2023 about early development. The sequel was intended to be one of the debut projects under H3 Entertainment, focusing on utilizing Metaverse, Web3, and AI technologies to innovate film production.
Directed by David Yarovesky, Brightburn reimagines the Superman origin story with a dark twist, centering on Brandon Breyer (played by Jackson A. Dunn), an alien boy raised by a farm couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) in Brightburn, Kansas. As Brandon matures and discovers his superhuman abilities, his struggles with anger escalate into destructive consequences for both the town and his family.
Even if Gunn approves a Brightburn 2, his involvement beyond an executive producer role is improbable due to his exclusive commitments with Warner Bros. as co-CEO of DC Studios until 2026. His responsibilities there include overseeing creative aspects and directing projects such as Creature Commandos and Superman within the upcoming DC Universe.
