During the debut of WWE Raw on Netflix this past Monday, John Cena made a bold announcement: he’s officially entering the 2025 Royal Rumble. However, in his promo, Cena also reminded fans that it has been nearly seven years since he last won a match on television. While the statement grabbed plenty of attention, wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer clarified in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Cena left out some key context.
According to Meltzer, Cena isn’t technically winless over the last seven years—his drought applies only to singles matches on television. In fact, Cena has picked up a few victories in other types of matches during that time.
Meltzer highlighted some of Cena’s recent wins:
On Raw in April 2024, Cena won a six-man tag team match.
At the Fastlane pay-per-view in October 2023, Cena emerged victorious in a tag team bout.
Outside of TV broadcasts, Cena secured two singles wins in 2023 during WWE SmackDown tapings, defeating Dominik Mysterio and Montez Ford in dark matches.
However, when it comes to televised singles matches, Cena’s last victory dates all the way back to 2018. Meltzer explained that this stat is somewhat misleading, as Cena has primarily participated in multi-man matches or special attractions in recent years.
Meltzer also pointed out that, aside from a handful of pay-per-view losses to names like Austin Theory, Solo Sikoa, and Roman Reigns, Cena has largely been victorious since late 2018.
Cena’s self-deprecating promo might have been slightly exaggerated for dramatic effect, but it’s clear that his claim about being winless for seven years comes with some important caveats. With the Royal Rumble on the horizon, fans will be watching closely to see if Cena can finally snap his televised singles losing streak.
