On the April 19, 2024, episode of WWE SmackDown, General Manager Nick Aldis made an exciting announcement from Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena: a new Women’s United States Championship is officially coming to WWE. Aldis introduced this new title in a pre-recorded message, emphasizing that it won’t simply be handed to anyone but must be fought for.
With the WWE CCO, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, on hand to witness the announcement, Aldis explained that the Women’s United States Championship will go to whoever is ready to “go above and beyond and seize the moment.” He called on the SmackDown roster to rise to the challenge, saying, “Opportunity knocks, and it’s time to answer and make history.”
While Aldis didn’t specify exactly how the first champion would be crowned, he hinted that it could involve a tournament, possibly leading up to an upcoming premium live event, or a battle royal on SmackDown. It’s also unclear if the championship will remain exclusive to SmackDown or, like the Women’s Tag Team Championships, could be defended across both brands.
This new title comes shortly after Liv Morgan claimed the Women’s Crown Jewel Championship in Saudi Arabia. The last addition to the WWE women’s division before this was the NXT Women’s North American Championship, which Kelani Jordan won in a ladder match at WWE NXT Battleground last June. The Women’s United States Championship now adds another prestigious accolade for WWE’s women athletes to chase, promising to make waves in the division.
